A hidden gem--one not to be missed!
Whether you are looking for a languid weekend brunch or a cozy, intimate dinner with friends or your lover, Snack Taverna will not disappoint. Nestled on the corner of Bedford and Morton St. in the West Village, Snack Taverna will certainly satisfy even the most discerning of palates. One of the owners, Dennis Chrysantholoulos, explained that the goal was to keep it traditionally Greek with a modern flair. They succeeded with simple but casually elegant decor and pictures of the old country hanging on the cream colored walls.
We tried both the brunch and the dinner. Brunch was a quiet affair. No reservations necessary. The brunch included an incredible creamy homemade Greek yogurt with honey and fruit that took us away on an enjoyable journey to the Greek islands, an assortment of daring and delectable omelettes, and with many meat and vegetarian options to choose from, why not bring the whole family to enjoy this authentic hidden gem full of mouth watering goodies?
Dinner was a special affair. The room was lively and candlelit. The pikiliameze sampler of tzatziki, taramosalata, dolmades, and pita was fresh, crisp and light. White wine imported from the beautiful island of Santorini and sautéed calamari brought us back to the sun kissed, bikini clad days with Ari Onassis, floating down the Mediterranean on his yacht. The tiny veal meatballs melted delicately in our mouths. Our favorite dishes were the juicy and tender cod, flavorful Greek salad and delicious Branzino. Even ten minutes later, the dishes were still dancing on our tongues! The ambience was alluring and intimate, which made this a fantastic place to bring new or old friends, a lover or a first date. The staff was wonderful and friendly, and if you go late at night and eat by candle light…who knows? You may even fall in love...if only with the food!
