Rincon, Puerto Rico

Not your typical day at the beach

Looking for an escape from the everyday? How about a trip to paradise that isn’t as far away as you may think? Come with me to sunny Puerto Rice, where all your cares melt away like the ice in a frozen daiquiri! Enter a world full of long, lazy days frolicking on white sandy beaches and late night cocktails out on your private balcony just moments from the warm ocean water. Where could this magical place be, you ask? Why, Rincon, Puerto Rico, of course!

Rincon is located on the quieter, less developed and incredibly beautiful west coast of Puerto Rico, in between the cities of Mayaguez and Aguadilla. We were fortunate enough to stay at the world-renowned Horned Dorset Primarvera Hotel, located in the heart of Rincon. Warning: Staying at the Horned Dorset could give you the desire to run away and live on the island forever, so be careful. You may never want to return home to reality.

The Horned Dorset is quite possibly one of the most beautiful hotels in the world. The Spanish colonial styling with hints of Moroccan flair of this cool and breezy hotel made me feel like I had stepped out of a Hemingway novel. In fact, I was waiting for him to come breezing through the lounge and into the Casablanca- styled bar for a drink or two. Or, in his case, a drink or six.

As I stepped into our two-level suite, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful marble floors beneath my feet, the large sunken tub which faced the roaring ocean, the great dark wood doors carved with beautiful floral motifs, and the inviting plunge pool outside on our balcony, where the ocean laps at the sand beneath your suite. Sleeping in this decadent suite made me feel like a queen, and hearing the ocean at night crashing against the rocks below humbled me. I felt so lucky to be in this splendid space.

There is plenty to do in Rincon, if you can tear yourself away from your balcony that overlooks the ocean and allows for a breathtaking view of the stars at night.  We enjoyed horseback riding through the lush green forests, sandy dunes and along the surf. We stopped atop a cliff for a fantastic view of the water below, which took our breath away. If horses aren’t your thing, there are many amazing places to surf, whale watch, deep sea fish, gamble and play tennis or golf. The friendly and informative staff at the Horned Dorset can set you up on whatever adventure your heart desires.

Speaking of desires, I could not get enough of the fresh fish, vegetables, and fruits brought out from the Horned Dorset’s own world-famous restaurant. There are many fantastic little spots to eat at in Rincon, especially if you are looking for delicious food with an authentic island flavor, but I must admit, I could have eaten every meal at the hotel. (I practically did!) Succulent lobster, crab, scallops and delectable pasta dishes and fresh sides of exotic fruits and vegetables will leave your taste buds jumping for joy! The walk from your suite to the restaurant is short, so indulge yourself in that extra glass of fantastic wine or champagne from their interesting and extensive list.

Between the fabulous location, fantastic service, breathtaking views and charming locals, Rincon, Puerto Rico may be one of those magical oases that you will want to secretly visit again and again.  Oops! Better book your ticket fast! I think I just let the cat out of the bag on this one!
