(Internet) Dating After Divorce

If you have ever been through a divorce, you know the heart wrenching agony that it can cause.

You may think you never want to get involved in a serious relationship or even date ever again. However, statistics show that most divorced people will eventually pursue a relationship at some point. If you have reached the point where you are considering dating again, and there are no obvious prospects available, perhaps the internet can help you find romance again. Be wary, though, as finding love on the internet can be dicey.

First off, consider what your goals are in dating. Are you just looking for companionship or are you seriously looking long-term? If you are looking for something casual and non-threatening, it is a good idea to consider chat rooms or personal ads. These kinds of sites allow as much or as little anonymity as you like and are also completely free. The downside to these kinds of sites, however, is that they are crawling with bots (programs that act like people, but are really only sophisticated ads) and those looking only for sex. If you are patient and willing to wade through the ads and the oddballs, you may just find what you are looking for.

If, though, you are serious about finding somebody to forge a lasting relationship with or have just given up on no-cost options, you might try a paid site. These sites tout things such as "compatibility matching" and high marriage rates among those who use their sites. They usually offer rates based on the amount of time you sign up for, with the monthly rate costing less if you sign up for a longer time.

These sites are filled with various personality tests and other programs that get a sense of who you are and what you are looking for in a relationship. Once the analysis has been completed, you will be shown a list of matches that the site believes would be a good fit. This is a nice feature, as it saves you endlessly poring over different people's profiles and/or chatting with them to get an idea of what they are like.

While most of these paid sites are quite good at giving you promising options, it should be noted that there are a number of sites out there that state they are just as good as the paid sites but cost nothing.

While this is technically true, these tend to be more of an annoyance than a help. They let you join, create a profile, browse matches,  and so on, but once you actually try to interact with another person, you will be informed that there is a charge involved.  But if you can find a high quality free site then you get the best of both worlds.

Using the internet is a good option if you are divorced and looking to date again. It allows you to find a relationship at your own pace and on your own terms. Sure, there are pitfalls, just as in the real world, but if dating in the real world was easy, online dating sites would have never been created in the first place.
